Staff Profile

Gareth Sircar

Lecturer

I am an Adult Nursing Lecturer at York St John University, currently on a one-year secondment that began in January. I qualified as a nurse in 2018 and have worked in the Emergency Department at York Hospital for almost seven years, most recently as a charge nurse.

My background in emergency care has shaped my approach to both nursing and teaching. I am used to working in high-pressure situations, leading teams, and supporting patients and families through challenging times. These experiences keep my clinical skills sharp and give me real-world examples to share with students.

Teaching

In my teaching, I focus on helping student nurses connect theory to practice. I believe that the best learning happens when students can see how knowledge applies to real-life situations. I encourage open discussion, questions, and critical thinking so that students can build confidence as well as competence. I aim to create a supportive environment where learners feel valued, respected, and challenged to grow into safe and compassionate practitioners.

Research

My research interests centre on emergency nursing, with a focus on trauma, resuscitation, and the skills needed to work effectively in high-acuity environments. I am particularly interested in how simulation training, reflective practice, and mentorship can improve preparedness, resilience, and patient outcomes in emergency care settings.
