PhD Researcher: Communication through spoken word: focusing on students with mental ill health within mainstream secondary schools

I am currently an English secondary school teacher with a background in theatre and media. I feel very strongly about early intervention when it comes to mental health and believe that we should be providing young people with toolkits to assist them in navigating their struggles.

I am a PhD student within the Institute for Social Justice at York St John, my focus is Communication through spoken word; focusing on KS4 students with non-neurodevelopment mental health issues within mainstream secondary school.

I plan to complete a practice-based PhD; my end objective is to create a spoken word curriculum for KS4 learners suffering with mental health specifically non-neurodevelopmental such as anxiety and depression.

I am interested in the potential creative component being a selection of completed spoken word performances from students dealing with ongoing ill mental health. The critical element will be to research the benefits of the full creative process, from writing creatively and then either recording the performance or livestreaming the performance for an audience.
