Neil Atkinson

I am a qualified teacher with over 15 years of experience in both Primary and Secondary education. I have been a lecturer here at York St John since 2021 and teach across both Education, SEN and Mental Health; as well as Children, Young People, and Education. I have Qualified Teacher Status as well as a MA in Education. I am also an Advance HE Fellow.

Teaching

I teach across the Children, Young People and Society BA (Hons); Early Years Education and Care (with Graduate Practitioner Competencies) BA (Hons); and the Education, SEN and Mental Health BA (Hons) courses. I teacher across a range of modules from the Academic and Professional Literacies, Philosophy of Education Module; to the Learning in Practice (experiential learning module). I also supervise both undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations and thesis.

I teach on the undergraduate courses:

  • Early Years Education and Care (with Graduate Practitioner Competencies) BA (Hons)
  • Education, SEN and Mental Health BA (Hons)

As well as supervise at postgraduate Masters level.

Research

The tile of my Masters Dissertation: The Role of Physical Education post COVID-19 and how to achieve this. This project aimed to research the wider periphery benefits of sport and outdoor learning on whole school development at Primary school level.

My current research interests focus are:

  • Mental Health, Outdoor Learning and Sport
  • Initial Teacher Training and Teacher Identity
  • Autism, Communication and Teams Sports
