Staff Profile
Rebecca Hudson-Tandy
Lecturer in Midwifery
I graduated from the University of Bradford with a first class honours degree in Midwifery Studies in 2012. Following this, I entered clinical practice and became a rotational midwife based at Bradford Royal Infirmary and then at Airedale General Hospital. In 2016, I entered Midwifery Research based at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and led on a variety of studies, including those investigating genetic disorders and the PARROT trial which has changed NHS practice in the management of pre eclampsia. In 2018, I graduated from the University of Leeds with a Master of Science in Advanced Practice. I also returned to full clinical practice, as a postnatal midwife. In 2020 I commenced my career in education and have worked at a variety of institutions until my appointment here at York St John University in June 2025. I am qualified in the Newborn Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) and have a specialist interest in Infant Feeding. I continue to work clinically at my local trust as a bank Midwife.

Further information
Teaching
I have previously taught across all year groups on Midwifery programmes, including at postgraduate level. I have led modules in antenatal and postnatal care, complications in maternity care and obstetric emergencies.
I am also responsible for the provision of infant feeding teaching and the implementation of the Baby Friendly Initiative (UNICEF BFI) standards across the university.
Research
I have undertaken research in Interprofessional Learning activities between Nursing and Midwifery Students, using infant feeding and the BFI as a springboard for conversations. These were presented at the University of York Teaching and Learning Conference and the Royal College of Nursing Education Conference.

Professional activities
Following qualification as a registered Midwife in 2012, I undertook various professional development opportunities. Whilst a clinical midwife, I completed an Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) course in 2014 which enabled me to train other midwives in obstetric emergencies. I am passionate about student learning and have kept up to date with regulations around supporting students in clinical practice. I also serve as an external examiner at the University of Chester, ensuring quality within their processes and procedures.
As part of my research role, I was required to undertake a Good Clinical Practice (GCP) course to ethically recruit participants to clinical trials and ensure their robustness.
Whilst in education I have gained Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in 2023 and also undertaken the postgraduate Assessment and Examination of the Newborn in order to teach the NIPE aspect of the course. I have also completed the 2 day Lecturer course with the Baby Friendly Initiative in order to comply with their teaching standards.
