Ruth Matthewson
Senior Lecturer, Undergraduate Year 3 Lead

I graduated from York St John University in 2001 with a BA (Hons) degree in Physical Education and Geography. I then completed a secondary PGCE in PE and Geography at Durham University in 2002 before embarking on a teaching career. In my first years of teaching I also completed an MA in Education from Durham University. I have recently joined York St John University as a senior lecturer after teaching Physical Education within secondary school for the last 15 years including Head of Department for the last seven years.

Teaching
I teach across two academic schools, the School of Sport and the School of Education.
Within the School of Sport I have delivered this year on the following modules:
- L2 Active & healthy Lifestyles
- L3 Assessment Strategies within Physical Education
Within the School of Education I have delivered:
- PE specific practical sessions for undergraduate and postgraduate courses
Research
I am just beginning my research journey as I begin to prepare for my PhD, based around the quality of provision for Physical Education within School.
Professional activities
With a background in delivering practical sessions to children, I enjoy still coaching and teaching to young people. I am an active coach within netball and gymnastics and regularly delivers sessions to children across York. I am also a tutor for British Gymnastics and mentors young coaches who are beginning their coaching journey.
