Dr Tom Carter

Lecturer in Counselling Psychology

I am a chartered Principal Clinical Psychologist with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC), working primarily in the NHS and part time at York St John University. My clinical expertise is in psychodynamic psychotherapy for complex mental health. My research expertise is in gender and sexuality research, Foucauldian discourse analysis, and critical psychology.

Teaching

I am module lead for the Group Psychotherapy module (PSY8207M) on the Doctorate of Counselling Psychology (DCounsPsy). 
I also contribute to the BSc. Psychology programme, teaching on the Applying Psychology to Work (PSY5010M) and Counselling Skills & Process 2 (PSY6028M) modules.

Research

My research area is poststructuralist gender and sexuality research, queer theory, discourse analysis.

Professional activities

I work locally as a Principal Clinical Psychologist in the NHS. I facilitate clinical group supervision and the training group component of the Group Psychotherapy module for the Doctorate in Counselling Psychology at YSJ. I also act as academic tutor for BSc. Psychology with Counselling students.
