Car parking
Limited parking permits are available for students. Find out how to apply.
Our campus and accommodation sites are located in the centre of York, meaning that parking is extremely limited.
On our York campus, campus parking can only be used by blue badge holders, or those that have pre-booked visitor parking allocated to them.

Several of our accommodation sites do not have any available parking. However, students can apply for a car parking permit that allows parking at 3 of our accommodation sites:
- The Grange (YO31 8SU - 115 spaces)
- Limes Court (YO31 0AE - 27 spaces)
- City Residence (YO31 8JY – 29 spaces)
Who can apply
If you are living in York St John accommodation, you can apply for a parking permit online, however your application will only be considered for approval if you have exceptional circumstances where a car is essential, for example mobility or medical issues.
You must outline your exceptional circumstances in your initial application, and provide supporting evidence.
Blue badge holders
Blue badge holders will be guaranteed a permit free of charge, if you provide evidence of your disabled badge when you apply.
Students with medical conditions
Students who need parking due to existing medical conditions will be required to submit evidence and details. Your health status will be reviewed on an annual basis when permits are re-issued. If demand exceeds supply, applications will be prioritised according to need.
Commuting students
Students commuting from outside of York will be prioritised for parking permits for the Accommodation sites.
Cost of parking permits
The cost of a permit depends on your circumstances:
- Students: £60 (full academic year starting 1 August)
- Student car share: £30
- Discounts: A 25% discount will be applied to permits for low emission vehicles (<120gCO2/km)
How to apply
Submit your application using the online parking permit application form.
You will be notified by email when your permit has been approved or denied.
Applications open on 1 August each year, before the start of the academic year. You may apply all year round, but we recommend applying as early as possible, as we have a finite amount of permits available. All parking is on a first come first served basis and a permit does not guarantee a parking space.
Students who require short-term parking can organise a 1-hour exemption period for York St John car parks using the MyYSJ app, through the 'Booking an hour in a car park' tile.
If this is the first time you are using the MyYSJ App, please also log into Moodle and eVision on a browser before downloading and using the app, so that all features of the app work correctly.
This allows students to book a 1 hour parking permit which is issued for 1 hour from the point of submission and which must be done within 20 minutes of the vehicle entering the car park. Should more time be required, a new booking request must be submitted before the previous one expires. Please ensure that all vehicle registration details are entered correctly.
