Your finances

York St John Student Support Fund

How we can help with your financial circumstances.

Postcards for Student Funding Advice team, alongside a phone showing the Blackbullion app.

The University can offer financial assistance through the Student Support Fund and short-term food assistance.

The aim of this support is to help you with unexpected financial difficulties.

It is not intended to be used as a primary funding source, but rather to help you regain control of your financial situation.

The Student Support Fund will open on Friday 3 October 2025.

We understand that finances can be challenging and if you are financially struggling, here
are some suggestions that may help improve your situation.

Working part time

We do advise students working part time if you are able to and the Careers team can help with this. They have links with businesses in York and advertise jobs all year-round including summer internships. You can find these jobs on our online career's platform, Handshake.

The following activities and resources will help you to enhance your chances of securing a job:

  • Part time Jobs Fair: Thursday 16 October, 12.30pm to 3.00pm in Temple Hall
  • Job Ready sessions: From week commencing Monday 13 October. Book via Handshake.
  • Log in to Handshake: Online CV resources. You can also book an appointment via Handshake with the Careers team to discuss your CV.

It is recommended that you work no more than 15 hours per week during term-time so that it does not impact on your studies.

Student bank accounts

You can open a student bank account which should provide you with an interest free overdraft. We do advise you to use this overdraft as a temporary measure to help support you with the plan to repay it once you receive your wages or your next student finance payment. It is good to have this overdraft available as a safety net throughout term time.

It is important to get the right student account for you. You can compare accounts on the Money Saving Expert website.
