Our Degree Apprenticeship framework

Information about degree apprenticeships at York St John University, including governance, the role of the employer and work based learning.

Our Degree Apprenticeships strategy

The heart of the York St John University mission is to advance knowledge and create education opportunities for the benefit of all. Our degree apprenticeship provision is just one of the ways we do this, incorporating employers and apprentices from all backgrounds and disciplines.

The grounding in work-based learning that degree apprenticeships provide supports one of the key strands of our strategy: producing conscientious graduates who fulfil future skills requirements. The purpose and vision for apprenticeship development should align with our brand and values.

The tri-partite relationship of employers, apprentices and the University is at the heart of what we do. The development of degree apprenticeships should involve employers so that we understand and can respond to their changing needs. Employers should be involved in any conversations you have in the development of programmes and engaged in the regular monitoring and evaluation process for established programmes.

Programmes should contribute to the sustainable growth of the University, using market insight to develop our portfolio in a strategic way. The portfolio we provide should be an exceptional product to help us retain existing clients and secure new business.

We are committed to providing a safe environment for all our learners. Our apprenticeships safeguarding officer can provide first line support and guidance in this area. You can read more about our approach to safeguarding and wellbeing on our Safeguarding page

Definition of Degree Apprenticeships

Higher Education apprenticeships are funded and regulated through the Department for Education (DfE) and inspected for quality by Ofsted. The quality of End Point Assessment is inspected by the Office for Students.

As an apprenticeship training provider, York St John University operates within the terms and conditions of its funding contract with the DfE. These terms and conditions affect all staff and students involved in apprenticeships. The Degree Apprenticeships Office has been set up to provide advice and guidance on issues of compliance and quality.

Degree apprenticeships develop knowledge, skills and behaviours required for a specific job role and combine this with academic learning at the appropriate level. Degrees offered as part of the apprenticeship are aligned to the qualification descriptors and relevant subject benchmarks.

Degree apprenticeships are available at the University at levels 6 and 7, equivalent to a Bachelor's and Master's degree respectively. They combine work with study, and apprentices will typically work full time and study part time. The programme tests both occupational competence and academic learning through on programme assessment and End Point Assessment.

Any degree apprenticeship developed must align with the apprenticeship standards. You can find the apprenticeship standards that are approved for delivery, in development, or proposed on the Skills England website.
