Safeguarding and Prevent
Our commitment to safeguarding and Prevent Duty.
Safeguarding charter
Safeguarding is everyone's business.
York St John University is committed to providing a safe environment for children and adults at risk who may be present on campus or engaged in University activities for a variety of reasons.
The welfare of children and adults at risk is paramount.
All staff should:
- Read and understand the Safeguarding Policy
- Undertake safeguarding training appropriate to their role
- Take appropriate steps if they have safeguarding concerns.
The University will:
- Take steps to prevent safeguarding risks
- Have in place appropriate procedures to deal with safeguarding issues
- Provide information about how people can raise concerns
- Keep records secure
- Share information with safeguarding partners in line with the law
- Keep the Policy and procedures under review.
Staff will find further information on the staff intranet Safeguarding page.
Prevent
The University is committed to fulfilling its obligations under Section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, which places a duty on universities in the exercise of their functions to have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism. This is known as the Prevent Duty.
The University is committed to supporting all students and staff, and it understands that its responsibility to prevent individuals from being drawn into terrorism is as crucial as its commitment to safeguarding and addressing other welfare needs.
The University's main focus on Prevent is to utilise existing processes for providing welfare, support, and advice to students and staff. It focuses on recognising general behavioural changes that may signal a need for additional support, rather than identifying 'extremism'.
