Beyond the Barracks

Supporting Students from Armed Forces Families in Further Education.

Member of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) using her skills to help in the construction of a mobile laboratory.

Beyond the Barracks is a collaborative project working with post-16 students from UK Armed Forces Families.

The project supports college or sixth form pupils with a parent or carer who has served in the UK Armed Forces, at any point during their lifetime. Beyond the Barracks aims to understand the unique challenges that post-16 students from military service families may face during their education journey and promote equality of opportunity in higher education.

Students from military service families have the opportunity to take part in innovative activities throughout 2026/2027. All activities are free to participants, with all transport, catering, and activity costs covered by the Beyond the Barracks Project.

Film project

Autumn 2026

Collaborate with professional filmmakers to share your experiences as a student from a military family. Get firsthand insight into the world of filmmaking, including scriptwriting and production, and meet other young people from military service families in your local area.

Mentoring Workshops

15 February to 19 March 2027

Students at one of our partner colleges can take part in a 5-week program of small group mentoring sessions led by a trained, university student ambassador. Learn about university life, strengthen your academic and transferable skills, and develop peer-to-peer relationships with other students from military service families in your education setting.

Trips

Students who participate in one of our other activities will be invited on a trip to celebrate their hard work.

Check back later to find out about the exciting trips we're planning for 2027!
