All approved modules can be found in the Study Abroad Module Catalogue, which is sent to you via email during the application process. Please refer to this when making your module selections.
Modules are assigned based on the order we receive your submission and your stated preferences. If you do not receive your first-choice modules, this may be due to timetable clashes, unmet prerequisites, full module capacity, or the module not being available during your exchange period.
A full time workload is 60 York St John University credits per semester which usually transfers to:
- 15 US credits
- 15 Canadian credits
- 16 Japanese credits
- 15 Korean credits
- 30 ECTS
For further information on your home universities' credit transfer policy, please contact your home universities' study abroad team.
Changes to modules
You can only request module changes via the Study Abroad team. Please do not try to change modules on e:Vision or via academic teams.
Please note:
- These changes must be finalised by the end of the second teaching week.
- You cannot change seminar groups.
- As of the start of your studies, most modules will be full and it may not be possible to change.
If you would like us to review a module change based on academic challenges, please email studyabroad@yorksj.ac.uk.

Attendance, engagement and absences

Under UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) guidelines, student attendance and engagement are monitored throughout the duration of your course. Absences may affect your visa.
During term time you should not miss any classes. Outside class time, you are expected to study on your own, including activities such as research, reading, assessment, assignments and projects, and dissertation preparation.
If you are unable to attend a scheduled academic session, you must inform the University of your absence, and the reason for your absence. Notified absences will be recorded as an absence from a scheduled academic session.
Find out more in the Student Engagement Policy in our Code of Practice for Assessment.
Transcripts
You do not need to request your transcript, as it will be sent automatically by the Study Abroad team in April (Semester One students) or August (Semester Two students).
One copy of your physical transcript will be sent directly via post to your home university by the Study Abroad team. You will also be sent a PDF version via email to your personal and York St John email alongside your home university.
Travel
Whether you can travel during your studies depends on how long you are joining us for. Find out more in the drop-down below.
If you are on a student route visa, you may travel during the validity of your visa. However, travel is only permitted outside of term time.
Please refer to our academic term dates.
If you are on a visitor visa or electronic travel authorisation (ETA), you cannot leave the UK after entry to the UK (until the full study duration is completed) as stipulated by the visa terms.
If you wish to travel within the UK, you must make sure you do so outside of term time. Please refer to our academic term dates.
Work and volunteering
Whether you can work or volunteer during your studies depends on how long you are joining us for. Find out more in the drop-down menu below.
Depending on your visa, you may be able to work a certain number of hours during the term.
Please check your visa stipulations to see how many hours you can work. Make sure you maintain a study/work-life balance, as your studies must remain your priority.
Please note that voluntary work will count towards the work entitlement stipulated on your visa.
Full time work is only permitted outside of term time. Please refer to our academic term dates.
As a single semester student, you may not work or volunteer during your time in the UK.

Studying in the UK
If this is the first time you have studied at a university in the UK, you may not be sure what to expect, or what we will expect from you. It is fine (and completely normal) to feel a little confused at first.
This section contains useful advice to help to clear up any confusion.
Find out the times and locations of your classes: lectures, workshops and seminars. Find where buildings are on campus using our online campus map.
Read the Moodle sites for your modules carefully and regularly. These include:
- Dates, briefs and instructions for assignments
- Reading lists
- Lecture topics and information
- Preparation tasks for seminars and classes
As soon as possible, find out the important dates for class tasks / submission of assignments. You must always submit your assignments on time.
At a UK university, you'll be expected to manage your independent study time, because most of your study time will be outside of class (reading for assignments, for example)
You must find out about referencing and avoiding plagiarism. If you are unsure about referencing or have any questions when you are enrolled at YSJ, speak to your personal tutor or your Academic Liaison Librarian for advice (not other students): Referencing support page.
You must attend 100% of your lectures, workshops and seminars. If you cannot attend a lecture, you must report your absence online.
Always prepare before lectures, so you can understand more of the lecture.
Don't look at your phone, translate or talk to other students during lectures.
You can ask questions at the end of a lecture.
Arrive on time for your lectures and classes, and try to sit at the front of the class - it will be easier to hear and understand.
You will be expected to use a computer for your University work. If this is new or confusing, don't worry - not everyone is a technology expert! Our Digital Training team will be very happy to help you.
In workshops and seminars, you are expected to participate by giving your ideas and opinions on a text or topic, and to maybe work in a group.
Make sure you contribute to class discussions - don't wait to be asked by name!
Not all questions and discussions will be based on 'facts', so there may not be one 'correct' answer. Always prepare before attending the seminar (read the task / text and find useful vocabulary to express your ideas!).
