Visiting York

The Shambles
York Minster

A city like no other

York is a city that feels like a town, with a compact city centre. You'll get to know your way around and feel like a local quickly. The history and architecture of the city highlights the stories of thousands of years of inhabitants. Catch up with friends over a pint in a pub built in the 17th century, or wander down cobbled streets in the footsteps of Romans. You can explore museums full of history and art, then spend the rest of your day shopping in the chains you know and love.

Learn about life in York from locals hanging out in the shadow of the ruin abbey in the Museum Gardens, or take a picnic to Clifton Ings or Millennium Bridge to enjoy some of our beautiful green spaces. Cycle past a scale model of the Solar System spread along the route of an old railway line, or grab dinner from a street food vendor in a redeveloped shipping container, beneath a canopy of fairy lights.

York's ever-changing landscape of culture, cuisine and community is the perfect place to visit this August.
