Funding

As an international student, there are a number of ways to fund your studies.

Funding in your home country

We accept a variety of funding options, such as US federal loans, Norwegian state loans, German DAAD funding and government-sponsored students from a range of countries.

The Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding Online

The Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding Online is all about alternative sources of funding, especially charities which make awards (fees, maintenance, research costs) to any student regardless of subject or nationality.

The Alternative Guide Online contains a huge database of funding opportunities, comprehensive guidance and numerous tools to help you prepare a winning grant application. York St John has purchased a licence so it is free for all students to use. You can email fundingadvice@yorksj.ac.uk for a PIN.

For an overview of how to use the guide, please watch this introduction video: Introduction to Alternative Funding.

Scholarships

Scholarships are a form of financial aid you do not need to pay back. View scholarships which may be suitable for you as an international student in the drop-down menu below.

We offer a scholarship worth £1,000 for undergraduate international fee paying students (excluding UK nationals) enrolling in any undergraduate course at our York campus.

Postgraduate students

We offer generous scholarships for recent graduates and all of our alumni can benefit from reduced postgraduate course fees.

Find out about this discount on our Scholarships for alumni page

A list of scholarships is also available on the UK Council for International Student Affairs website.

For up to date information please visit ukcisa.org.uk.

Paying tuition fees

Tuition fees vary depending on study level, course and duration. Details of tuition fees for all our courses can be found on the individual course pages.

Tuition fees must be paid from your own account or from the account of an authorised individual or sponsor. Payments by unknown third parties are not permitted. For more information, please check our Student Financial Regulations and Anti Fraud policies.

Paying the deposit

Most international students need to pay a deposit. The amount is 50% of the first year's tuition fees (or 50% of full fees for a 2 year master's course). Your deposit amount will be shown on your unconditional offer email.

You need to pay the deposit before your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) can be given for your visa application.

No deposit is needed for sponsored students, students with US federal loans, and students with Norwegian State Loans. These students need to provide the following:

  • Sponsored students must submit a sponsor letter to the university
  • US students paying through the federal loans system must submit an official notification of the loan to our admissions team
  • Norwegian students paying through the Norwegian state loans system must provide the preliminary statement of financial support to the admissions team.

Pre-sessional course students must pay the 50% deposit as well as 100% of the Pre-sessional fees.

Paying the balance

When you pay the balance depends on whether you are studying an undergraduate or postgraduate course. Find out more in the drop-down below.

If you are an undergraduate student you will need to pay your remaining tuition fee balance prior to being able to fully enrol on your course.

Please ensure you have appropriate funding and plans in place to pay your tuition fees.

After you have paid your 50% deposit, you can usually pay the remaining fees in 3 instalments. For students starting their course in September these will typically be:

  • Early December
  • Early February
  • Early May

For January entry these will typically be:

  • Early April
  • Early June
  • Early August

Your instalment plan must be set up before your course start date, so you can fully enrol.

Early payment discount

A 5% early payment discount is available for international postgraduate taught students at both our York and London campuses (not applicable to foundation, undergraduate, research, or PhD courses).

To be eligible for the discount, you must pay 95% of your full course fees before completing your enrolment.

Paying in full before your CAS is issued is optimal because the discount can then be applied to the fees stated on your CAS.

Payment methods

Our preferred payment method is through Flywire, a dedicated platform for secure payments for EU and International students.

Pay using Flywire

You can also pay by card using your e:Vision account or through the York St John University payment system.

You will need your student ID number and date of birth to log in to the system.

Please note: We are unable to process credit or debit card payments over the phone.
