Paid time off
We all want to enjoy our work, but let’s also ensure we can enjoy our time away from work and make the most of the moments in life that matter to us.
At York St John we provide a range of paid leave to enable you to do just that. As well as providing you with paid time off for those moments where you simply need it the most.
Below are just some of the types of paid leave which we offer to our employees.
Paid leave available to York St John employees
We offer generous annual leave entitlements, which include 8 bank holidays. The amount of leave you are entitled to depends on your grade:
- 34 days annual leave pro rata for grades 1 to 6, rising to 39 days after 5 years' service
- 43 days annual leave pro rata for grades 7 and above
In addition to your annual and bank holiday leave entitlement, there are 5 additional discretionary days when the University is closed at Christmas, giving us all the opportunity to take a well-earned rest at the same time.
Becoming a parent is a precious time and at York St John we want to give you the opportunity to make the most of this time by offering enhanced pay during your family leave. This includes 26 weeks of paid occupational leave for adoption, maternity and shared parental leave, and 2 days paid grandparents leave on the birth or adoption of a grandchild.
We also offer 6 weeks paid time off when caring for a family member with a terminal illness, and 1 week paid dependants leave when dealing with emergency caring arrangements.
Volunteering is beneficial for us but also for our local communities. You can take up to 2 days paid leave (pro rata) each year to support you to get involved and volunteer.

Flexibility
Flexibility is in-built in the type of work we offer at York St John, offering roles with a variety of responsibilities, hours, times and locations of work. But we are also committed to offering our colleagues options to maintain the work-life balance which works for them, and the University.
We are proud to offer our colleagues a range of policies which offer them the flexibility to balance their responsibilities at work and at home in a variety of ways. View these policies below.
If you work within certain departments and/or roles, you may have the option to work from home/off campus on occasion or more regularly as part of your team's agreed working practices.
You may be able to take advantage of our Flexi-time scheme if you are on Grades 1-6 and work within an eligible role/department. This scheme enables you to flex your working hours (within defined boundaries). Your line manager will be able to confirm if you can use this scheme.
Many of our colleagues balance work responsibilities with caring for a family member who is older, disabled or seriously ill. Our Carers Leave Policy provides one week’s unpaid carers leave, per year, to support you to undertake your caring responsibilities.
This policy allows colleagues to take a planned period of time off work on a full-time basis. This may be to concentrate on alternative personal priorities and commitments such as family, study, or travel. Conditions apply in relation to your length of service.
