Your money
Learn how we ensure fair and competitive pay, understand the benefits offered by our pension schemes and how we support employees to make their money go further.
Pay
You will receive a competitive salary recognising your skills and experience. At York St John University we are proud to be an accredited Living Wage Employer, as we believe that all colleagues deserve a wage that meets their everyday needs.
The University adopts the nationally agreed pay spine and employees can expect to progress through their pay band, with an approximate increase of 2% to 3% a year, up to the grade maximum. Our pay rates are uplifted annually in line with a sector negotiated pay award.
Our most senior staff are on spot salaries and are eligible for an annual pay review through the Remuneration Committee. For these staff, pay increases are performance related.
Pension
Providing our colleagues with a financially secure future is also important to us. At York St John we are committed to providing you with access to a generous pension scheme.
Our pension schemes are Defined Benefit, ensuring that your pension savings will deliver you with a guaranteed level of income in retirement, as well as the option to take a tax-free lump sum. The level of income you receive will be based on your salary and how long you pay into the scheme. You can rest assured that your savings will grow in line with inflation.
As a member of the schemes, you will also benefit from life assurance cover worth three times your annual salary, helping to provide valuable financial security for your family should the worst happen.
Your contributions to your pension scheme will benefit from tax relief. This means that you do not pay tax on your pension contributions (providing you do not exceed the savings limits).
There are two schemes available, the scheme you will be eligible to join will depend on your role.
Academic colleagues, in predominantly teaching roles, are eligible to join the Teachers' Pension Scheme (TPS). You can find more information about the scheme on the Teachers' Pension website.
Professional support colleagues and non-teaching academics are eligible to join the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS), administered by North Yorkshire County Council. You can find more information about the scheme on the North Yorkshire Pension Fund website.
