Getting started with IT

Our Getting started with IT page explains important IT information for you at York St John University.

York St John is a Microsoft university, which means we use a lot of Microsoft tools and products. Examples including Microsoft Outlook for emails and Microsoft Word for writing and editing documents. Microsoft and Microsoft Office 365 have lots of accessibility features that we use as assistive technology.

You can use either use Office 365 online in your internet browser, or download and install it to your device.

Adapting your device

Your device is an important tool in your life, both in study, at home, and on the go. Let’s get it set up to work for you.

Settings are often used to make things look nice as opposed to work most effectively. For example, text can be very small to fit it all on one page and the mouse pointers can be harder to see. All these settings can be changed to better suit you.

Using My Computer My Way and the accessibility guides for your operating system is a good place to start.

My Computer My Way

The free guides in My Computer My Way offer step by step instructions on how to adapt your phone, computer or tablet to meet your needs. You can search for a specific need such as making text larger, or filter the guides based on your symptoms, for example a hand tremor, or condition such as dyslexia. My Computer My Way is created by the charity, AbilityNet, so you can use it anytime for free.

The most common adjustments that people might need are for your screen, zooming and magnifying, font size, speed and mouse and cursor size.

Make your device work for you

Most devices are set up generically and this may not suit your preferences or working style. Think of all the unnecessary apps that come on your phone. Streamlining your device to work for you will aid your productivity and concentration.

Here are 4 top tips for making your device efficient:

Devices can have lots of distractions. You can install and ad blocker to help remove advert distraction in your internet browser. Your device might also have a focus mode to help minimise distractions.
