Before joining York St John University in 2006, I worked as a youth worker and then a primary school teacher, both in the United Kingdom and in Spain. My first role at the University was in Initial Teacher Education. I now enjoy teaching on the Masters and Doctorate programmes in the department of Children, Young People and Education (CYPE).
In my role as senior lecturer in education at York St John, I co-lead the Education MA and MRes programmes. I direct and teach the module on the MA Education programme called Critical Approaches to Education in which students examine their practice in light of theory and their personal values.
As module director for the Professional Doctorate module called Identifying and Articulating Issues in Professional Practice, I work with students in critically reflecting on their professional journey and the links between their professional biographies and their practice.
I am co-Post Graduate Research Lead for the School of Education, Language and Psychology, which means that I aim to ensure postgraduate students have the best possible experience in their research journey. I also supervise MA, PhD and EdD students in their research.
I believe that research journeys can and should be personally enriching and significant for all those who participate, by enabling making sense of our professional practices with the purpose of improving them. My research interests include social justice in and through higher education and my book ‘Universities and epistemic justice in a plural world: Knowing better’ addresses the issue of justice in the domain of knowledge in universities.
My research interests are cross-disciplinary and for this reason I founded and co-convene the cross-school Higher Education Research Group at York St John. I believe in collaborative practices in research and other academic work to ensure greater diversity of thinking.
