Staff Profile

Ewan East

PhD Researcher

I am a composer, improviser and teacher, currently studying a PhD in Music Composition.

I completed my undergraduate degree in Music Composition at York St John University in 2019, receiving the Ann Green Prize for contribution to university music. I returned to my home town of Lincoln to complete at PGCE in secondary music and completed my NQT year at a local secondary school. I returned to York St John University in 2021 to undertake a Masters in Music Composition and have continued at the university to complete my PhD.

I have particular interests in the future of 'classical' music, music and mental health and compose in a minimalist/romantic style.

Teaching

I have taught in Music in secondary education from Key Stage 3 to 5. I have delivered lectures on career pathways and also supported feedback sessions on York St John University's music employability course.

Research

For my masters independent project I composed ten piano pieces based on the symptoms of depression, aiming to create an alternate resource to foster conversations and support understanding of mental health.

For my PhD I am exploring the use of streaming services as a composition tool for contemporary composers. Using shuffling as a creative tool that gives the audience and listeners different outcomes every time they listen to music.
