University Managed Houses

University Managed Houses (UMHs) are a perfect option for students who prefer a close-knit, quieter environment with access to local facilities.
Our UMHs range from 4 to 10 bedroom houses, each with their own unique features. You will be living with fellow York St John students, and many of our houses have outside space as well as communal rooms so you can relax with friends. UMHs are part of the local community and you will get to know the real York, while still being close to campus.
UMH rooms will vary in size and layout, but all will contain a desk and chair for study and furniture for clothes storage. Explore our individual houses below, or jump to a price band:
Band A: £169 per week | £7,605 per year (45 week contract)
A smaller UMH room, which may have a single, three quarter or double bed.
Band B: £179 per week | £8,055 per year (45 week contract)
A room in a standard sized UMH. Room sizes will vary but there will be more floor space and a three quarter or double bed.
Band C: £189 per week | £8,505 per year (45 week contract)
A room in a larger UMH, with more communal space inside and outside. Room sizes will vary but there will be more floor space and a three quarter or double bed.
Band D: £199 per week | £8,955 per year (45 week contract)
An ensuite UMH room with a three quarter or double bed.
A perk of our University Managed Houses is they will have some form of parking available at the property or in the surrounding area. Expand the drop-down below to read more about parking.
A majority of our UMH properties are in a Residents' priority parking zone. This means that students living at that property can apply to the council for a parking permit or visitor permits at the property. You will need to supply proof of ID and a proof of tenancy letter that the Accommodation team can provide once you have moved into the property.
Please be aware that houses may not have guaranteed parking for the total number of students living in the house. Before you bring a car to university, we advise speaking to your housemates and contacting the council to arrange applying for a parking permit and available space.
The remainder of our University Managed Houses are not in Resident Priority Parking Zones so street parking is available outside the property and in the area.

Choosing a UMH
A unique experience
Choosing to live in a University Managed House (UMH) will give you the chance to get to know York as a local resident. You will be immersed in the city's culture and social scene, and you'll have a ready made group of friends to explore it with.
You will always be sharing a house with other York St John students, so you can meet people across a range of courses. Our UMHs are usually located in clusters and close to other student houses, so you can easily visit friends nearby. Our Accommodation team run regular social events for UMH students where you can get to know your neighbours.
As well as unique features and character to your house, UMHs often have a separate communal area outside of the kitchen, and private outdoor space. Every UMH comes with a washing machine that you can use free of charge, unlike in halls. Some houses come with on-site car parking, however this will vary.
A practical option
All of our UMHs are managed by York St John, on behalf of the landlords who own them. This means that our Accommodation team is available for advice and help. Maintenance works and assistance may need to be shared with applicable letting agencies versus the Accommodation team, however this process will be communicated with relevant students. This keeps things simple for you.
When you are allocated a room in a UMH, we will send you all the details you need to help you settle in. The charm of UMHs are that each house will have its own unique layout and inventory. However, we guarantee that bedrooms and communal spaces will have relevant furniture and household goods as provided in our other accommodation sites, so there is no extra admin for you to do.

The locations of our University Managed Houses vary, but all are around 2 miles from the York St John campus.
By living in a UMH you will experience life as a local in the beautiful city of York. The city has lots of green spaces to relax in, and amenities like supermarkets, shops, cafes and restaurants are never far away. York's public transport is also comprehensive, so you can travel around town using buses or e-scooters.

The history and architecture of the city highlights the stories of thousands of years of inhabitants. Catch up with friends over a pint in a pub built in the 17th century, or wander down cobbled streets in the footsteps of Romans. You can explore museums full of history and art, then spend the rest of your day shopping in the chains you know and love.
