Course overview
The Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship (CMDA) supports the progression and development of aspiring and experienced managers. It is also an opportunity to inject new skills and enterprise by recruiting new talent into trainee schemes.
You will develop confidence, capability and independence through a combination of practical training in the workplace and academic learning. Create a pathway for career progression by enhancing your knowledge and leadership skills. The course is suitable for employees of private, public and third sector organisations of all sizes. The blended learning approach combining in person and online teaching allows you to fit your learning around your employment and another responsibilities.
This course is aligned to the Level 6 Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship standard. It is designed by employers in partnership with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). This means that it has been guided by industry experts who understand the knowledge and skills required to succeed in management. You are able to focus on the areas most relevant to your professional development, supported by our dedicated team.
You can choose the 2 year Accredited Entry route or the CMDA 3 year route. The 3 year route is ideal for employers wishing to use their levy to fund a sponsored degree route for trainee management schemes. The 2 year route is designed for those with at least 3 years of demonstrable management experience or a Level 4 qualification in a closely related subject or similar. This allows you to use your prior learning to fast track your progression. This route is subject to approval.
Course structure
Level 4
You will be taught using a blend of in-person and online sessions and resources. During this you will hear valuable insights from academics, practitioners and industry experts. A lot of your learning will take place in the form of work based assignments, allowing you to apply your knowledge directly to your role.
The degree apprenticeship will start with an induction that will introduce you to the course team. This will provide valuable insight into the University, student support, and apprenticeship's individual modules.
This degree apprenticeship is currently undergoing revalidation and module details for Level 4 are to be confirmed.
Level 5
This apprenticeship combines work-based training with a blended learning course. It includes 14 compulsory modules (12 taught modules and 2 work-based learning modules supported by a tutor) and a 40 credit work-based Management Report.
Modules
Gain an understanding of the key concepts and principles of management and leadership. Consider the contrasts between management and leadership and how the different approaches impact organisations. You will also analyse your own management and leadership skills and devise a personal plan to develop further.
Learn about marketing planning in a global context. With markets shifting, it is crucial that organisations are able to conduct effective marketing planning. Apply key marketing theories and principles to the practical aspects of marketing planning by using real life case studies or work-based material.
Gain an understanding of how to efficiently manage people in organisations within a legal and ethical framework. Develop the ability to apply learnt theory and skills to real situations. You will also learn how to change situations to improve business performance.
Learn about the key decisions managers must make daily about what to produce, at what price and how to make the best use of the resources available. Gain an understanding of costs, behaviour and how to use this information in decision making. The knowledge you will gain will be relevant to a variety of companies, including non-profit organisations.
This module is focused on your personal and career development needs. Gain an appreciation of the organisational or professional environment and how it influences your chosen sector. You will be expected to apply the skills and knowledge you have developed in a work based context. You will define your own work based or related study or be assigned one by your tutor.
Level 6
Modules
Develop an appreciation of the theoretical and practical issues relating to project management and operations management. Gain an understanding of the different aspects of organisations and the relationships between the various operational areas.
Gain an understanding of the key concepts and principles of leadership. Consider how leadership may be used to influence innovation and change within organisations. Learn about how the behaviour of a leader influences both individual and organisational performance and creativity. You will aim to identify how leaders can interact with individuals to raise their performance.
The demand for effective strategic management has increased due to the complicated and changing environments most private and public sectors currently exist in. This module draws on concepts introduced in earlier modules and you will further your critical understanding of these topics. Explore the theories and models used in strategic managements and how to review existing practice.
Advances in technology have changed the way we live, communicate and conduct business. Examine the issues arising from advances in Information Technology (IT). Consider the ethics, professional conduct and social responsibility associated with these advancements. Develop a critical awareness of responsible IT use through strengthening your analysis and problem solving skills. This will enable you to develop effective and sustainable strategies for IT use.
Undertake an investigation into an authentic and challenging management project within your organisation. Demonstrate your understanding of the application of business principles in a real industry setting and the results in management decisions.
Teaching and assessment
Teaching and learning
This degree apprenticeship utilises a combination of in person and online teaching, including:
- Campus based workshops
- Interactive presentations
- Discussions and debates
- Online study groups
- Recorded lectures
- Access to a wide range of resources using our virtual learning environment, Moodle, which means that you can access the materials when you need them.
You will be expected to commit around 1 day per week to your studies, though this may vary depending on your individual needs. You will receive regular feedback to inform your work and help you prepare for the final assessment. Your academic tutor will support you throughout your degree apprenticeship.
Workplace Learning
In addition to your academic studies, you will learn and develop knowledge and skills in the workplace, including:
- Engaging in continuous professional development
- Observing and learning from best practices
- Participating in mentoring sessions
- Taking part in performance reviews and gathering evidence of your achievements
You will be supported by a work based mentor who will guide your progress. This combination of theory and practice will help you to gain a thorough understanding of chartered management in the workplace.
Assessment
This course offers an authentic assessment strategy to help you to develop essential skills. Each module includes assessments that reflect real workplace task. You will receive detailed feedback to support your development, encouraging continuous improvement throughout the course. You will have opportunities to submit drafts and have 1 to 1 tutorials to refine your work before final submission.
