Shakespeare on Screen in Prison

'O Brave New World'

Prisoners and guards walking in line outside at women's prison

Shakespeare on Screen in Prison (SoSiP) is a partnership between the York St John University Prison Partnership Project (YSJUPPP), KPPL Productions and HMP New Hall (a closed category female prison in West Yorkshire).

The Donmar Warehouse and KPPL Productions Shakespeare Trilogy films (Julius Caesar, Henry IV and The Tempest) are used to inspire collaborative, relational and durational drama projects with women residents in prison.

Filmed in 2016, the Trilogy was originally shared with women and girls in prisons and schools across the UK. Set in a women's prison, the first production asked the question, "Who owns Shakespeare?" Productions of Henry V and The Tempest followed, featuring a diverse company of women.
