Alice Baxter

Converge Creative Writing Tutor, PGR in Practice-based Fine Art

I am an artist and writer currently studying for a practice-based PhD in Fine Art and contemporary poetry.

After completing my undergraduate BA in English Literature at the University of Bristol, where I was awarded a Sustainable Futures Award and a Bristol PLUS Award, I moved back up north to do an MA in Poetry and Poetics at the University of York, and am now in the process of studying for a PhD at York St John.

Most of my critical work has focused on the poets and artists of the New York School, particularly Frank O’Hara, and the intersections and collaborations between modern abstract art and contemporary poetry.

Teaching

I teach Creative Writing to Converge students, have experience teaching English and Art in secondary school classrooms, and run workshops on creative writing outside of the university.

Research

My BA and MA theses revolved around the poetic reception of Frank O’Hara, and his artistic collaborations with New York School artists respectively.

My PhD utilises my own writing and art to examine the process of creation, and of collaboration across the languages of creativity. I am especially interested in modern and contemporary abstract painting and drawing, and contemporary poetry.
