Staff Profile

Ben Fitzpatrick

Senior Lecturer

I have been teaching law in higher education since 1993, after a period working as a Research Assistant at the Law Commission of England and Wales. I have worked at the University of Birmingham, the University of Leeds, the Open University; the University of York; the University of Derby and Coventry University Scarborough.

I have worked in a number of teaching and leadership roles, including as Director of the LLB at the Open University, and as Head of Law at the University of Derby. At the University of York, I was a member of the team which established the law school, and I was Director of Learning and Teaching in law.

A number of the roles I have been in have involved outreach and widening participation activity, promoting interest in legal study and contributing to public legal literacy.

I have delivered training to lawyers, police and other criminal justice professionals.

Teaching

I have worked across the law curriculum, but my principal teaching interests are in criminal law and criminal justice; public law and human rights; and philosophy of law. I also enjoy supervising dissertations in these areas.

I am interested in the ways that law and legal processes reflect underlying philosophical and political principles.

Research

My research has focused on criminal law, criminal justice, human rights and legal education.

Professional Activities

I have acted as an External Examiner on law programmes at a range of Universities.
