Associate Professor

Brendan Paddison

I am Associate Professor and Associate Dean in the Business School at York St John University. I teach across a range of Business and Management subject areas at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, including tourism, responsible business and politics. As Associate Dean, I provide academic leadership for foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate awards in Business, Management, Economics and Accounting across the Business School.

I completed my PhD titled Governance and Community Advocacy in Tourism Development: An International Comparison awarded by the University of Leeds in 2014. My research interests include tourism and destination management, urban geography, destination governance, public policy and public sector management. I have published widely on this subject.

I lead the Visitor Economy and Experience research group at York St John, co-chair the Tourism Education Futures Initiative (TEFI) and Chair the York Tourism Advisory Board. I am Subject Editor: Tourism for the Journal of Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism Education and a member of the editorial boards for the Journal of Teaching in Travel and Tourism and the e-Review of Tourism Research journal. I am also the Book Review Editor for Enlightening Tourism - A Pathmaking Journal.

As a University Liaison Representative within the Business School, I work closely with our collaborative partners at home and overseas. Previously, I worked for an international language school teaching English as a foreign language. I have lectured at partner universities in Rotterdam, Seville and Vietnam and at the Royal Agricultural University. I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Teaching

I teach across a range of Business and Management subject areas, including IT, tourism, project management, business politics and career and professional development. I currently teaching on the following programmes:

  • MSc Leadership and Management
  • MBA / MA Suite

I am also involved in the supervision of research degrees.

Research

My main research interests include politics of place, with an interest in tourism, urban geography, destination governance, public policy and public sector management. I have presented on these topic areas both nationally and internationally.

Professional Activities

I am a fellow of the HEA.

I am a member of the Editorial Review Board for the e-Review of Tourism Research journal and am the Book Review Editor for the Enlightening Tourism - A Pathmaking Journal. I have also been guest reviewer for the British Journal of Management and the Journal of Applied Statistics.

I am external examiner at the University of Derby for their Business Management awards and at the University of Salford for their Tourism Management awards.
