I joined the University in 2023 after a career in local government where, as a chief officer, I was concerned with leading the transformation of the local authority from service provider to civic leader, placemaker and builder of resilient communities, through developing new models of civic leadership, working in new ways with residents to empower communities, and establishing new models of service delivery.

Having completed my MA by Research at Leeds University and PhD at York St John, I took up the opportunity to develop my career in teaching and research in an area that will draw on both my research and professional experience relating to strategic leadership and placemaking.

Teaching

I am teaching a range of modules including the Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship (CMDA). I also supervise undergraduate dissertations. Programmes I teach on include:

  • BA(Hons) Tourism and Destination Management
  • BA(Hons) Management and Leadership

Research

My research interests are in the areas of tourism strategy, the effects of power and how stakeholders may effectively be engaged in sustainable tourism strategy-making. I am also interested in stories of place, and sense of place and how these impact on people's embodied engagement with places and spaces.
