Staff Profile
Ginger Liu
Postgraduate Researcher
I am an American British visual artist working in photography, film, and writing.
I hold an MFA in Photography and a BA (Hons) in Contemporary Media Practice. My career began in reporting and photojournalism and I have produced still and moving image projects in the US, UK, and China.
I started my own communications and content business in Hollywood and developed a portrait studio to photograph actors, musicians, and burlesque performers. I have documented the Hollywood burlesque scene for over 10 years. Dementia entered my family life and for the next few years, I documented my family living with the disease. A photograph from the series was a finalist in Portrait of Britain. The self-portrait film I produced has been screened around the world. My specific interests are in the portrait.
I am currently developing multiple projects at opposite ends of the joy spectrum - burlesque and dementia. I write about artificial intelligence and entertainment, art, health, and work. I have published half a dozen books.

Research
I am researching death and bereavement in the digital afterlife, starting with Victorian portrait photography and comparing technology, rituals, and society with 21st-century artificial death technology.
My research is practice-led and I am documenting my own experience with death and bereavement together with contemporary practices. I have produced a podcast that aims to discuss the latest developments and interview global experts in AI technology, grief, religion, science, historians, and entertainment to get a sense of the human condition.
As ever, my productivity crosses photography, film, video, digital, AI/VR, and text.
Professional activities
I am an American British CEO/Founder of a Hollywood and London PR Comms agency and an international independent film production company. I am a digital communications pioneer working with remote and hybrid teams since 2012 and GME was one of the first PR agencies to use SMM for clients.
As the managing director of a film company and PR comms agency, I travel between Los Angeles and London on a regular basis for business development, stakeholder engagement, and networking. In my film company role, my experience covers producing, financing, project management, marketing, and collaboration on a local and global level. I have travelled across the world for conferences, festivals, speaking events, business development, financing, and pitching. In my PR role, I have project-managed international clients and teams of content producers for award-winning clients in business/startup, technology, health, and entertainment, which has also seen me travelling between Los Angeles and London for business ventures. I am a journalist and author, speaker, and consultant. I specialize in global communications and creative content. A digital-first company, GME was one of the first agencies to go virtual hybrid in 2012.
In addition, I am a Public Advisor Lead consultant working with government health agencies, universities, researchers, and stakeholders, advising on communications, policy, health inequalities, education, and stakeholder collaboration. I am also a Trustee for a major charity.
