Staff Profile
Lucy Hurst
Postgraduate Researcher
I am a postgraduate researcher (PGR) in creative writing and PGR Representative for the Humanities.
My research considers how the relationship between disability and environment is explored through poetry. I am particularly interested in experimental contemporary poetic practices. The critical element of my thesis compares an ecocritical reading of OCD in Wayne Holloway-Smith’s Love Minus Love, to that of the DSM-5.
My poetry has been shortlisted for the Bridport Poetry Prize and the Aryamati Poetry Prize, and has longlisted for the Poetry Wales pamphlet competition. My first pamphlet, 'Modern Medicine', was published by Fly On The Wall Press in 2021.
As PGR Representative for the Humanities, I liaise with PGRs, the research office, and the research lead through forums and individual meetings. Alongside this, I am helping to coordinate the Postgraduate Journal of Interdisciplinary Humanities and running social events.
I am a member of York St John's Ecological Justice Research Group, and helped to establish the Living Lab. The Living Lab Core Team was awarded the UKRI Green Gown Award, Tomorrow’s Employees 2022.
I have worked both as a research assistant and as a casual academic.

Teaching
I am currently building a portfolio for AFHEA accreditation.
I co-lead on the York St John Living Lab Cookbook Project (2023). This involved supervising a group of student volunteers (20+) throughout semester 2 to create a student-led cookbook. This process included teaching sessions and being the point of contact.
Freelance tutoring (2022 to 23). I tutored at PhD level. In this role I supported students through finding additional resources, making PDFs accessible, and editing academic writing.
Casual Academic (2022). I planned the materials and resources for the undergraduate module Introduction to Creative Writing, and taught the first session.
Guest lecturer (2021). ‘The Reflective Practitioner’ module. I presented a lecture to master’s students on practice-based research within the arts.
Research
Research Assistant (2022). As a research assistant for the Living Lab, I was responsible for planning and supervising two public-facing research festivals and disseminating our findings to different demographics. Within this role I liaised with, and coordinated, lecturers and students from 9 different modules, the Estates department, local activists, and the City of York Council. I also produced materials for staff and students, and was involved in designing assignments which reflected our ecological aims. To disseminate our activities, I presented our findings to the public through the second research event, attended Postgraduate Researcher (PGR) conferences, contributed to a paper through writing a literature review and a passage critically analysing our pedagogical approach, and made considerable contributions to a report and a blog.
