Dr Margaret Meredith

Senior Lecturer in Education

Staff profile image of Margaret Meredith

I am a senior lecturer in education and Module 1 director on the Professional Doctorate programme, which aims to assist students in critically reflecting on their professional journey and the links between their professional biographies and their practice. I co-lead the Masters in Education programme and am Post-Graduate Research Co-Lead for the School of Education, Language and Psychology. I supervise PhD and EdD students in Education.

My research interests include social justice in and through higher education and my book ‘Universities and epistemic justice in a plural world: Knowing better’ addresses the issue of justice in the domain of knowledge in universities. My interests are cross-disciplinary and for this reason I founded and co-convene the cross-school Higher Education Research Group at York St John. I believe in collaborative practices in research and other academic work to ensure greater diversity of thinking.

Before joining York St John University, I worked as a youth worker and then a primary school teacher, both in the United Kingdom and in Spain. My first role at the University was in Initial Teacher Education.

Research

My research focuses on social justice in and through universities. I mainly focus on:

  • Reflecting on the values that drive my own practices and reflecting on, theorising and developing these practices and encouraging students to do this, too. I am interested in action research and participatory forms of research.
  • Valuing types of knowledge that go beyond what is traditionally considered to be 'academic' knowledge in higher education. In my research and practice I work towards epistemic justice in higher education, where a variety of types of knowledge are valued.
  • The role of universities in promoting good social outcomes in the wider world.
