Staff Profile

Dr Sarah Cooper

Senior lecturer

Lecturer Sarah Cooper

I have worked in academia since 2007, teaching on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, relating to fashion marketing, fashion writing, and journalism. I have taught in the UK, Hong Kong and Spain, and have worked as a journalist since 1999 in the UK, Australia, Hungary and the UAE. My research explores sensory consumption, specifically in relation to haptics.

Teaching

My specialist areas are journalism and marketing, often in the context of fashion. My students explore readerships and consumers and gain an understanding of the key principles in creating effective content. We also discuss the ethics relating to the fashion and media industries, such as in terms of consumption habits and supply chains. I also teach practical skills, such as Adobe InDesign, and online-writing techniques, such as SEO, and supervise dissertations.

Research

My PhD explores the impact of haptics on the consumption of journalistic content. I have delivered papers related to the subject at conferences in Australia and across the UK. My contribution to knowledge relates to the quantification of the sensory stimuli, specifically in relation to haptics. In addition, I have contributed to conferences regarding excellence in teaching and a book on external examining. In addition, I am co-editor of the International Journal of Fashion Education, Teaching and Practice, currently an online publication showcasing progressive research relating to fashion.

Professional activities

I'm currently the external examiner for the MA Fashion, Enterprise and Society at the University of Leeds, and have been an external examiner at UAL and Solent University. I also edit my own online publication Yella (yella-yella.net), showcasing independent brands and entrepreneurs.

I have been the external advisor for two postgraduate degrees at the University of Salford.

I'm currently a member of the York St John academic board and have contributed to the work-based learning steering group (2022), Research into Professional Practice in Learning and Education (2022) and the action-learning sets (2023).

I'm co-editor of International Journal of Fashion Practice and Fashion Teaching in Higher Education.
