Dr Zanib Bi Mohammed

Senior Lecturer, Mental Health. Race Equality Institutional Lead and School of Technology and Health-Equality and Diversity Lead

I am employed at York St John University as a Senior Mental Health Lecturer. Prior to this, I was at the University of Leeds and the University of York as a Mental Health Lecturer. My primary teaching focus is on Mental Health issues. That said, I have a long-held interest in research related to Offender Health issues, Substance Misuse and working with vulnerable and marginalized population groups, namely South Asian groups which is reflected in my various clinical roles and research/academic studies. More recently, I was involved in a HEE funded research exploring the use of XR technology in mental health teaching. My other research and teaching interests relate to; ethics and law, substance misuse/addiction, genomes/genetics in mental health, including safe practice, values-based nursing and compassion and care in nursing practice. Health focussed prison-based research, including exploring epidemiology, social determinants of health/health inequalities and health promotion. Mixed methods research design using pragmatism and generic qualitative frameworks.

Additionally, I worked for the NHS since qualifying as a registered mental health nurse in 1997, in a variety of different posts and settings: Acute In-patient, Substance Misuse Team, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, Community Mental Health Team, Family Nurse Partnership RCT Research Program and as a Clinical Research Fellow based at HMP Leeds. In this post, I was involved in two large scale studies: Assessing the risk of self-harm in an adult offender population: an incidence cohort study and a mixed methods investigation into the personal reasons for illicit prescribed opioid use in prison which was undertaken as a Doctorate.

Qualifications: Doctorate in Nursing, Huddersfield University; MA in Medical Ethics and Law, Keele University; PGCE/PCET Teaching, Huddersfield University, PGCE Managing Change, University of Bradford, RMN/Dip in Health Studies, University of Bradford,  Clinical Hypnotherapy, London College of Clinical Hypnosis.

I enjoy travelling, keeping fit, yoga and walks in the countryside. I particularly enjoy theatre and going to see bands play live.
