Health Programmes: Service Users and Carers Group
Our service users and carers have a wealth of diverse and valuable experiences and insights into their lived experiences of using our healthcare services.
The Service Users and Carers Group are people from diverse healthcare backgrounds who currently, or have at any time in the past, been a recipient of health and social care services or provided social services.
At York St John we recognise that service user and carer involvement is crucial to the development of health courses and enhance the curriculum. This allows students to learn from the lived experiences of people who have used our health services and their carers.
Our health care programmes have a strong focus on whole person care and an integrative approach to care and rehabilitation. People with lived experience are the experts in their care and have a vital role in enhancing the students understanding of patient centred perspectives. Service users and carers contribute to the professional development of the students, enabling the students understanding of how to develop professional relationships.
Service user and carers may choose to be involved in one or more of the following roles and can dictate the amount of involvement they wish to engage in:
- Consultation in development of curriculum and curriculum changes
- Validation/approval events with the University and relevant Professional Standards Review Boards
- Open Day attendance
- Student recruitment involvement
- Teaching and assessment of students within a module team
- Participation in research
