Postgraduate Research School

Supervision

Your supervisory team will be dedicated to guiding and supporting you throughout your research journey, helping you achieve successful completion of your programme.

Your supervisory team will consist of a main supervisor and one or more co-supervisors, who will all meet York St John’s eligibility criteria.

Your supervisors will be members of the University's academic staff.

Before applying, it's important to have had contact with your main supervisor. Your full supervisory team will be confirmed before you begin your programme.

Supervisors

Your supervisor will be your primary point of contact throughout your research journey and will be responsible for:

  • Providing support and guidance for your training and development
  • Advising on all aspects of your research and thesis preparation
  • Offering timely feedback on your written work, including your final draft
  • Arranging regular review meetings
  • Ensuring that written records are kept of all formal supervisory meetings
  • Addressing any concerns you raise and bringing them to the attention of the School Postgraduate Research Lead (SPGRL)
  • Reporting any patterns of absences or lack of contact to the Registry

Postgraduate Research Tutor

When you begin your degree, you will be appointed a Postgraduate Research Tutor (PGRT). Your PGRT will be an academic staff member outside your supervisory team, typically your School PGR Lead. They will be available to provide advice or support beyond what your supervisors offer. To arrange a meeting with your PGRT, you will be able to contact them directly.

Change of Supervisory Team

Your Supervisory Team is intended to remain consistent throughout your degree. However, if you need to change your supervisor or add experts to your team, this can be arranged as a routine part of your programme.

Supervision hours

Each year, as a full-time postgraduate researcher, you should have at least 10 contact points with your supervisors, while part-time researchers should have a minimum of 6 contact points.

These supervisory meetings can be conducted in person or via Microsoft Teams if you are unable to attend on campus.
