It’s advisable to identify a potential supervisor before you formally apply. Reaching out early allows you to discuss their availability and share your initial research ideas.
Engaging with a potential supervisor at this stage can be highly beneficial. These preliminary discussions will help you understand their research interests and expertise, ensuring they align with your academic goals. This dialogue can also assist in refining your research ideas and making important decisions about the direction of your project.
A potential supervisor may provide valuable advice on shaping your research proposal. Their input can be instrumental in developing a strong and coherent proposal, a key component of your application.

Supervisor support at the PGR School
As a Postgraduate Researcher (PGR), you will be guided by experienced academics who are well-equipped to support your research goals. These supervisors offer a blend of subject expertise, methodological skills, and mentoring to help you throughout your academic journey.
It is essential to find supervisors whose research interests align with your own and with the focus of your proposed study. At York St John, PGRs benefit from a team of at least two supervisors, ensuring comprehensive support and diverse insights. Your main supervisor will assist in selecting a second supervisor to create a strong supervisory team.
Many of our supervisors are recognized by the UK Council for Graduate Education (UKCGE) for their extensive experience and expertise, ensuring you receive high-quality mentorship. With the right supervisory team, you’ll be well-prepared to tackle the challenges of your research and achieve your academic goals.
