Actions and resources

Explore the resources below to begin decolonising your own thinking and practice within your area of work or study.

Together we will change the world written in white chalk on pavement

There are many ways to approach the task of decolonising, both within and beyond the university context; however, it can be difficult to know where to start.

The resources below are intended to help deepen our individual and collective thinking around decolonisation and to yield concrete ideas for institutional, structural and systemic transformation.

Reading and resources list

Whether you are new to decolonising work, unsure about its relevance to your field or already deeply invested, there is always scope for developing a deeper understanding of the key concepts, texts, debates and politics of decolonisation.

Follow the link below to explore our growing list of reading and resources, which has been collated by colleagues at York St John. Although far from exhaustive, these readings and resources provide a critical foundation from which to approach decolonisation, anti-racism and anti-colonialism in the context of higher education.

Decolonising prompt questions

Approaches to decolonisation will necessarily vary according to local contexts, histories and the demands of their corresponding 'communities of resistance' (see Sivanandan, 1989). As Priyamvada Gopal reminds us, '[p]osing the right questions for each context is, in itself, part of the intellectual work of decolonisation' (2021, 881).

Harnessing Gopal’s 'critical and radical spirit of enquiry' (889), members of the York St John Anti-Racism and Decolonisation Community of Praxis (ARDP) have put together a set of questions and prompts from which University staff and students might begin thinking about decolonisation within their own contexts and practices.
