At York St John, our Teaching and Learning Enhancement (TLE) team is dedicated to fostering excellence in teaching and learning.

Reporting to the Pro Vice Chancellor: Education, we work as a central unit and collaborate across disciplines with educators, professional partners and students to enhance teaching practices and ensure an outstanding student learning experience.

What we do

Guided by our University strategy, we focus on enhancing learning, teaching, and assessment through:

  • Enhancing student experience: Leading and facilitating projects that enrich the learning journey.
  • Expert consultation: Providing guidance on best practices in teaching, assessment, and academic tutoring.
  • Professional development: Coordinating a comprehensive CPD programme, including professional recognition and an annual teaching and learning conference.
  • Induction and support: Delivering academic induction and continuous support for teaching and learning staff.

Support for professional recognition

Whether you are seeking HEA Fellowship, UKAT personal tutoring recognition, or a National Teaching Award, we provide tailored guidance and resources to help you succeed.

  • HEA Fellowship is an internationally recognised benchmark for teaching and learning in higher education. Through our accredited scheme, we assist colleagues in identifying the appropriate category of fellowship (Associate Fellow, Fellow, Senior Fellow) and guide them through the application process. Find out more about our accredited fellowship scheme.
  • UKAT recognition is available for all York St John colleagues involved in academic advising and personal tutoring. Gaining recognition from the UK Advising and Tutoring (UKAT) organisation highlights your expertise in this critical area. Read more about how we support colleagues to gain UKAT recognition and access academic tutoring development.
  • The National Teaching Awards (NTA) and Collaborative Awards for Teaching Excellence (CATE) are annual competitive processes conducted by AdvanceHE, which celebrate excellence in teaching and learning across the UK higher education sector. Find out more about how we support colleagues with NTA or CATE nomination.

Please email TES@yorksj.ac.uk if you are interested in gaining professional recognition via any of the above. Alternatively, explore and register for one of our upcoming workshops via our Academic Development site.

Strategic support

The TLE team also ensures compliance with regulatory standards and institutional goals by:

  • Supporting TEF readiness and contributing to writing groups
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of the Access and Participation Plan (APP)

Together, we're committed to creating and supporting an academic environment that empowers both educators and students.
