Event series and reading group hosted at York St John University

The Discussing Decolonisation event series is hosted by the Teaching and Learning Enhancement (TLE) team at York St John as part of our University's commitment to decolonisation and anti-racism.

These public-facing events provide opportunities for staff and students to think more deeply about the history of colonialism and anti-colonial resistance, to rethink approaches to curricula, pedagogy and practice, and to discuss issues pertaining to decolonisation in HE with peers and colleagues from across the sector.

Event series

Co-convened by Lucy Potter and Dr Laura Key, the Discussing Decolonisation event series has been running at York St John since the 2023/24 academic year, with around six events taking place online and in person across each academic year.

The events have included guest lectures, panel discussions, workshops, roundtables, film screenings and Q&A sessions, covering a range of pertinent topics and approaches to decolonisation as an intellectual, political and pedagogical endeavour. All of the events are free to attend, and anyone is welcome to join us, including all university staff, students and members of the public. Find out more about our past and future events by using the links below.

Booking for all events will become available, via Eventbrite, as soon as dates are confirmed. All events are listed in our rolling Eventbrite collection. To receive updates about forthcoming events in the series, you can sign up to join our mailing list, which is open to anyone.

Reading and discussion group (DDRG)

This year, the Discussing Decolonisation series will also be complemented by an internal cross-disciplinary reading group.

The group will explore the history, theory and politics of anti-colonial thought alongside debates over ongoing efforts to 'decolonise' higher education. The sessions will generally take place online, and are open to all York St John staff, students, affiliates and partners.

A draft schedule of discussion topics and readings can be found on our blog.
