Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP)
Learn more about PEEPs and how we can support you to create one.
A Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) is a bespoke escape plan for individuals who may have difficulties evacuating a building to a place of total safety without support or assistance from others.
PEEPs may be required for any member of the University community (staff, students or visitors) who may have one or more of the following:
- Mobility conditions
- Sight conditions
- Hearing conditions
- Neurodiverse or mental health conditions
- Other circumstances that may affect a person's ability to evacuate (this could include people with underlying health conditions, people who are pregnant or those who have a short-term injury, such as a broken leg).
The key question that determines whether a PEEP is required is 'can you evacuate a building unaided in a reasonably prompt manner during an emergency situation?' If the answer is no, then a PEEP is likely to be required.
How to get a PEEP
When registering with the Disability Support and Inclusion Team (DSIT) you will be asked if you need a PEEP.
York Campus
If you are based on our York Campus, a member of the DSIT team will meet with you on campus once you have your timetable and create a PEEP.
London Campus
If based on our London Campus, the DSIT team will notify the London Campus teams that a PEEP is required. A member of staff in London will carry out the PEEP and notify the DSIT team so this can be added to your Learner Adjustment Plan (LAP).
Distribution
Once a PEEP is created, it is sent by email to the Security teams and the Health and Safety Officer. Academic staff including lecturers and technicians can see if a student has a PEEP on the LAP report. If a student has a PEEP, the field 'Has a PEEP' will show as 'True' against your adjustments.
If a member of staff sees you have a PEEP, in the event of an alarm sounding, their role is to escort you to the nearest refuge point if possible or wait with you until the security sweep. The security team will then action the PEEP.
Review
Students with an active PEEP be invited each October by DSIT to review their PEEP, in case of any change in their condition or teaching spaces. In between these times, it is the responsibility of the individual who is the subject of this PEEP to advise the Disability Practitioner of any changes which will require for the PEEP to be reviewed.
