Information for parents and guardians

Answering your questions about our student accommodation.

We know that parents, guardians, friends and family members are a vital part of the support network students have when joining York St John University.

We understand that you might be anxious when your loved one moves away from home. This page can hopefully provide some comfort for you and information on the support students will receive during their time with us.

Please be aware that we are unable to talk to parents, guardians, friends and family members directly about accommodation queries including specific student information due to data protection laws.

Supporting your student

Before moving into their university accommodation, it is important that incoming students are introduced to key elements of university life prior to arrival. This helps aid students in regards to being familiarised with what it is like to live in university accommodation, and can help in preparation for September Arrivals.

  • Encourage your student to become more independent as their move in date approaches.
  • Suggest they call or email our team directly if they have any questions. This makes answering questions much easier, as for data protection reasons we will need to speak to them.
  • Make sure that your student is aware of practical activities integral to university life. This includes, but is not limited to: using a washing machine, making a budget for a weekly shop and cooking a few simple dishes.
  • Advise them to take a look at the support we offer them. They can find this information on our current student pages.
  • Make sure that they are familiar with emergency contact numbers and that they know yours.

Our relationship with parents, guardians and other third parties

Due to data protection laws, we are not able to give any information about a current student or applicant to a third party without that student's express permission.

This includes parents, guardians, spouses, and siblings. We understand that this can be frustrating, so in order to speed up the process we ask to speak to the student directly if they have queries that relate to their application.

Safety and security

All of our accommodation has access to 24/7 security based on main campus. We take the safety of York St John students very seriously. Apart from the University Managed Houses, all of our sites are covered by CCTV.

Our Security Lodge is located on our main campus. You can contact the team on 07885 201 182 or 01904 876 444 for emergencies, and security@yorksj.ac.uk for non-emergencies.

Support in accommodation

As well as our 24 hour Security team, we have Residential Support Assistants (RSAs) based at the below sites:

  • St John Central
  • City Residence
  • The Grange
  • Limes Court

An RSA is a second or third year student who visits students in their designated accommodation on a weekly basis during night duty shifts. During these shifts they are available to speak to students and signpost them to available resources at the university to help support them in their student journey.

Students living in our accommodation without a designated RSA are able to reach out to our team via email (accommodation@yorksj.ac.uk) to organise a meeting with an RSA subject to availability.

Repairs and maintenance

We know that you may want to help your student with repairs and maintenance concerns, but it is important that issues are reported directly by the student themselves. This is due to data protection laws, but also helps our professional staff make sure that concerns are able to be looked into as soon as possible through accurate first-hand reports.
