Scholarships and support

As well as loans, you may be able to access extra funding support and scholarships. Some of these opportunities include:

  • NHS Learning Support Fund (for students on Nursing, Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy or Paramedic Science courses).
  • YSJ Scholars (scholarships for students from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, estranged students, and care leavers).

Preparing for university

It's a good idea to get a head start on your finances so that you are free to enjoy the start of your degree with no pressure.

A summer job can be a great way to top up your bank account. If you can spare the time whilst studying then part time work can let you earn while you learn and our Careers team can help with this. They have links with businesses in York and advertise jobs year round. You can find these jobs on our online careers portal, Handshake. The Student Finance Calculator is a helpful tool to get a clearer picture of what you can afford for accommodation and how to manage your finances through your studies. You can input details like household income, university location, and where you will be living while studying to get an estimate of your eligibility.

Blackbullion

To help you manage your finances, we have an award winning online financial wellbeing tool called Blackbullion. It is a learning platform that helps you develop financial confidence and empowers better decision making. It helps with navigating student finance and budgeting skills, planning pensions and learning about investing. It consists of mini online videos so that you can learn at your own pace. They focus on financial skills you will use forever. Best of all, it's free for you to use, even before you arrive on campus.

Blackbullion also have a money manager app, which helps you create your own budget, get spending insights and saving suggestions, and manage your money with confidence. The more you use the app, the more bullions you will be rewarded with. These can be exchanged for prizes.
