Pai Chai University

Daejeon, South Korea

Pai Chai University (PCU) is one of South Korea's oldest modern Universities. It has approximately 14,000 students, and is located in Seo-gu in Daejeon.

PCU was established by Henry G Appenzeller, an American Methodist missionary, in 1885. Named 'Pai Chai Hak Dang' (meaning 'fostering gifted figures') by Emperor Gojong, the university has produced historical pioneers such as Dr. Seungman Rhee (first president of South Korea) and Sowol Kim (national poet).

PCU is strong in Korean language education. Its Korean Language Education Centre, established in 1992, was awarded the 26th King Sejong Culture Prize in Education by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. In addition, PCU currently runs King Sejong Institutes in Brazil. PCU is also certified by the Ministry of Education's International Education Quality Assurance System.
