Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) is a multicultural campus where around 50% of the student body comprises of international students.

Students from 106 countries and regions (as of 1 May 2023) gather to study in this uniquely international environment in Japan. Moreover, 1 in 2 faculty members are of foreign nationality, and the official languages of the campus are English and Japanese. Around 90% of all courses at APU are held in both English and Japanese. Students have the option of pursuing their areas of study in either language.

Academic calendar

The academic year is split into 2 semesters: 

  • Spring semester: Mid March until early August (approximate dates)
  • Fall semester: Late September until early February (approximate dates)

Accommodation

Accommodation abroad

APU provides off-campus housing for all exchange students. The student dormitory is located in downtown Beppu and is in a convenient location for amenities. Students must live in this accommodation. 

Approximately 600,000 JPY for 1 year and must be paid prior to arrival.

Additional costs

This information is about additional costs of studying at this host university. Please be aware that prices are subject to change, and the list may not be exhaustive.

We recommend looking at the host website, as well as entry requirements for the country, to get a full understanding of the costs involved.

Students are required to pay into:

  • Japanese National Insurance - approximately 20,000 JPY per year
  • Gakkensai (personal accident insurance) - approximately 1,000 JPY per year
  • Student’s Comprehensive Renters Insurance - approximately 5,000 JPY for one year.  This will be paid with your housing fee.

Other costs:

  • Food and meals: 30,00 to 40,000 JPY per month
  • Academic Expenses: 10,000 to 20,000 JPY per month
  • Transportation: 45,000 JPY to 75,000 JPY per semester (Depends on whether students choose to use bus tickets or purchase a bus pass)

Visas

Please ensure you have an up to date passport that expires no earlier than 6 months after you intend to return.

You will be provided with guidance and documentation from the partner university but it will be your responsibility to obtain the correct visa. Neither the Study Abroad team here or at the partner university are qualified to offer consultations or detailed advice regarding visa applications. Immigration laws are complex and subject to frequent changes.
