Claire Roper

International Programmes Tutor

MA (York St John University), BA (Leeds), CELTA

I am a Tutor of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) within the International Programmes team and teach on a variety of courses. I am currently teaching on the new 30 week Preparation for Academic Success course which prepares international students for their degrees. I have worked at York St John University for eight years on a casual basis and before I joined international Programmes, I worked as a support worker supporting students with disabilities in their studies. I have also taught at numerous summer schools around the UK and also work as an IELTS exam supervisor.

Background

My teaching career started 10 years when I studied for the CELTA qualification. Since then I have taught EFL at numerous summer schools and have also taught privately. In 2011 I started casual work for YSJ International Programmes. I also worked as a disability support worker until giving this up to focus on teaching full time. I have just completed the DELTA (Diploma in teaching English language to adults) a level 7 teaching qualification which enables me to build on my existing knowledge of EFL teaching practice and theory and focus on certain areas of interest such as methodologies and course design. As an International Programmes tutor I teach across a wide range of programmes including General English and our academic English preparation courses.
