David Sanmartino

Postgraduate Researcher

My name is David Sanmartino; originally from Spain, but Scotland is home now. Whereas I have a clinical background in Health Psychology, CBT, and Forensic Psychology, I am a humanistic and pluralistic practitioner. The depth of the relationship with clients and putting their needs and preferences first has always been a priority. A few years ago, I returned to university to study an MSc in Counselling Pluralistic approach at Abertay University, which is more in tune with my values.

Currently, I feel very privileged to be doing a fully funded PhD working with York St John University (YSJU), the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). This project aims to explore the barriers, mechanisms, and experience of using Routine Outcome Measures (ROMs) in clinical practice from the client's perspective.

I work under the lenses of Pluralism and Metamodernism, in which there is not a single truth or reality but many ways of doing and being that are equally valid. Pluralism focuses on respecting and promoting the uniqueness of human beings, which makes us richer collectively.

I am immersed in this full-time PhD project, and additionally, I dedicate one and a half days of the week to seeing some clients in private practice and teaching counselling at the university. Also, I occasionally collaborate with different organizations in Scotland to promote men's mental health and helping to prevent suicide.
