PhD Researcher, Healing Subjects: Living Well with the Aftershocks of Sexual Violence

After completing my MA Contemporary Art Theory at Goldsmiths University of London, I relocated to Paris where I have spent the last four years working in academic translation and museums.

My PhD project asks how victims of sexual violence can learn to ‘live well’ with their injuries and conditions. Through an analysis of artworks dealing with medicine and healing, this project examines the way liquids feature in cultural narratives of healing – particularly within marginalised communities.

This research focusses specifically on artworks made by women and the LGBTQIA+ community - a focus necessitated by the historical medical negligence these groups have faced. This project examines the alternative liquid-based healing practices developed by such groups in response to medical abuse and negligence and asks how such practices have allowed a certain self-governance to victims of sexual violence.
