Staff Profile

Susie Walsh

Lecturer - Leadership and HRM

I am a Lecturer in Leadership and Human Resource Management.
My previous career was in Third Sector (voluntary and charitable) Organisations, managing support services to families in conflict. As Service Manager I had responsibility for the range of services delivered by our main office in Scarborough and also the outreach services that we provided to neighbouring towns. During my time in this role, I developed both national and local partnership agreements, in response to identifying local need, and the value of collaboration and exchange of knowledge has been a key priority throughout my career and is particularly important in my current role at YSJ.

I was a member and subsequent Chair of the east coast multi-agency Domestic Abuse Forum that brought together people from a range of public, statutory and voluntary agencies to drive forward improvements to the response to those impacted by domestic abuse. I also headed a steering group that informed the service provision of the first stage of the government SureStart delivery in Scarborough and was influenced by experiencing first hand the value of consulting with service users when developing and delivering services within communities.

As a mature student I returned to university to pursue my academic interests at YSJ graduating with a BA (Hons) in Business Management (York St John) followed by a MSc In Leadership and Management (York St John). It was during my time as a student that I recognised the positive impacts (such as increased confidence and wellbeing) that university life can have, and how in providing choice and opportunity to people through supporting their studies, and beyond, that positive changes can be created and sustained - this became the impetus for becoming a lecturer.

Teaching

I currently on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and also deliver modules on the CDMA course within York Business School. I supervise dissertation undergraduate and post graduate students. I am module director for the following undergraduate modules: Managing People in Service Industries, Leadership in Context, Leading and Developing High Performing People and the CMDA Management and Leadership module.

Courses I teach on include:

  • BA(Hons) Human Resource Management
  • BA(Hons) Business Management
  • BA (Hons) Events Management
  • BA(Hons) Sports Management
  • MSc Human Resource Management
  • Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship (CMDA)

Research

My PhD research considers leadership in the Third Sector, how success is identified and measured and what factors lead to success in voluntary and charitable organisations. The research aims to investigate and highlight the valuable work that is undertaken in the Third Sector, providing insight into the meaning of success in charitable organisations that offer services to people through the work of staff teams made of paid employees and volunteers.

I am currently involved in a cross-school project researching the student experience of Academic Tutoring at YSJ, which in part considers how the co-creation of services can encourage and enhance student engagement. In 2021 I researched the impact of the pandemic on small business owners in York as part of a partnership project between YSJ Communities Centre and City of York Council that resulted in the provision of service delivery directly to small business owners to mitigate the impacts of the pandemic and strengthen the skills present within this valuable and creative sector.
