Thelma Reed

Specialist Technician in Microbiology

In 2004 I completed an Honours degree in Biomedical Sciences, choosing to specialise in microbiology in my final year.

After graduation, I spent 10 years working as the senior Microbiology Technician in the Biomedical Science Teaching Laboratories at the University of Bradford.

Since leaving Bradford, I have worked in the Pathology Labs for the NHS and as a Research Technician at The Leeds Institute of Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Medicine.

I joined the Biosciences team at York St John University on a casual basis in 2017 and have been a permanent member of staff since 2019.

Teaching

Due to my expertise in Microbiology, I was invited to deliver the first year Microbiology practical classes at York St John University as a visiting lecturer before a permanent Microbiologist was secured. I also deliver the third year Microbiology Masterclass in order to prepare the students for the research projects that they complete over six weeks in their final year.

I teach Biomedical Sciences.

Research

During my time as an undergraduate student, I took part in an eight week research project, investigating the levels of DNA damage in sperm cells when exposed to different conditions.

In my final year as a student, my own research project involved the organism Streptococcus agalactiae. I was investigating the conditions that may affect the working of a particular ABC transporter system located within the outer membrane of the organism with the view to identifying a putative target for a future vaccine.

I spent two years working as a research technician at The Leeds Institute of Rheumatology & Musculoskeletal Medicine.
