All About Respect
All About Respect
All About Respect creates a space for open and honest dialogue within our student communities about healthy relationships.
All About Respect also delivers a wide range of training to staff and students:
- Bystander Training
- IDAS Champions Training
- Sexual Violence Disclosure Training
Report and Support
Students can access support information as well as report any incidents of sexual violence, harassment, domestic abuse or hate crime. Reports can be made anonymously or with contact details to a YSJU Welfare Adviser. Innovative and creative campaigns have been devised by students; a recent campaign in a local club was led by our student IDAS Champions Co-ordinator, which highlighted that sexual violence and harassment is not okay on nights out and promoted the support available to students. The project has been really well received and was recognized by the Guardian as runner up for the University Student Experience Award.
History of the project
In 2017, York St John University and their partners York College, IDAS and Survive were successful in bidding for funding from HEFCE for the All About Respect project. The project was a collaboration between York St John University, York College, and local specialist charities Independent Domestic Abuse Services (IDAS) and Survive who support survivors of rape and sexual abuse. It was designed to consider the recommendations of the Universities UK report ‘Changing the culture: Report of the Universities UK Taskforce examining violence against women, harassment and hate crime affecting university students’
The overarching objective of the project was to safeguard students by creating spaces for open and honest dialogue within our student communities about healthy relationships, and embedding cultures of respect to strengthening sexual violence, harassment and domestic abuse prevention. Following community consultation, All About Respect worked with students as co-creators to design project materials which included posters and flyers to raise awareness and to promote the support available on campus as well as the support on offer from organisations in York. In collaboration with students, we have run successful campaigns and students have used dance, song, poetry and spoken word to convey their experiences and key messages to the student community.
Future projects
With the support of funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner, we will be rolling out the project across the city to deliver training and launch awareness raising materials on tackling sexual violence and harassment across the community.
We will continue to work closely with local charities IDAS and Survive who will support training our students to deliver training to staff from local bars, clubs and other organisations across the city. New for this year we have some student internship opportunities and other paid opportunities to join the All About Respect team!
