Degrees of Change

A collaborative project encouraging tourism and hospitality students to be change makers.

Group of business people having a conversation

Tourism and hospitality degrees produce students with subject expertise, and generally useful employment skills. But is that it? We think students want more from their degrees and that they can be active advocates for better tourism.

There are so many ways that students could take the lead in change for better tourism, from the global to the local.

We would therefore like to briefly explain our innovative project and invite you to join it. It is based on a research article Degrees of Change: Activating the Philosophic Practitioner. At its heart are education interventions that encourage and enable students to:

  • Understand why and how the tourism world has developed
  • Question its development
  • Create vision for improvement
  • Participate in action for change

Participation

We are proposing flexible levels of involvement. Partial implementation would entail some changes to the content and delivery of existing modules or work placements. Full implementation would mean the design and delivery of a new module. You could change one thing, or participate in a bigger programme of change.

Participation can be at the individual lecturer level, or departmental or school level. It might involve the formation of a student-led society, or a prize for the best student projects. To learn more about implementing the Degrees of Change project, download our How to implement Degrees of Change guide (DOCX, 58kB).
