Dr Somdip Dey
Lecturer of Data Science
I am an Embedded Artificial Intelligence scientist, engineer, entrepreneur, AI art and music producer, and TED speaker. I currently hold the position of CEO of Nosh Technologies, a Lecturer of Data Science at York St John University, and a Lecturer of Computer Science at the University of Essex. I am also the Danah Zohar Professor of Quantum Philosophy & a Professor of Practice (AI/ML) at Woxsen University, India.
I have more than 14 years of industrial experience including working for Microsoft and Samsung, developing technological products that are currently used by billions of users in different ways. I have also been a tech entrepreneur for over 10 years with multiple successful exits and raising millions of GBP to fund the ventures. For my contributions to improving society through applications of embedded machine learning, I have been elected a Life Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, named an MIT Innovator Under 35 in AI/Robotics in Europe, an Outstanding Achiever in Education, Science & Innovation at the India UK Achievers Honours and a World IP Review Leader since 2022.

Teaching
Over the years I have taught a wide range of modules in the field of Computer Science and Technology Entrepreneurship. Currently, I teach Data Science modules including Programming, Object Oriented Programming, Artificial Intelligence and Data Visualisation as part of the Data Science Degree apprenticeship course.
As a module leader of Artificial Intelligence (AI) module I have restructured and revised the module to include latest developments in the world of AI including Generative AI, Large Language Models (LLMs), Transformer models and Responsible AI. We are one of the first Universities in the UK to include these latest developments in AI as part of a degree course.
Research
My research primarily focuses on Embedded Machine Learning, Responsible AI and Sustainability, exploring efficient AI implementations on constrained devices. My work encompasses diverse fields, including cyber security, blockchain technologies, agri-food supply chain and cryptographic methods. I am particularly interested in developing sustainable computing systems, leveraging AI to optimise resource usage and enhance security in various applications. My interdisciplinary approach also extends to agri-food supply chain optimisation using blockchain and AI, and have a strong track record of contributions to the fields of data security and algorithm development. Over the years I have raised hundred thousands of GBP for my research including funding from Innovate UK, BBSRC IAA, etc. Some of my research works have also led to commercialisation; for example, the Nosh app - world's first AI powered food waste and inventory management app.
